Clowns have long been a part of Crow ceremonial life, and here Wendt Red Star celebrates their contemporary incarnation.  The painting -- a series of nine photographic pigment prints transferred to canvas -- depicts the mischievous figures against a unifying blue background.  Only men portrayed clowns in the past; now, both men and women participate.  They costume themselves as elders, wear pillows to distort their bodies, and don masks to hide their faces.

Henry Varnum Poor began his artistic career with painting and drawing, but then turned to ceramics for his livelihood. He became one of America's leading ceramicists of the 1920s. Poor, a self-taught potter, thought of ceramics as canvases for his compositions, thus aligning his work more with contemporary paintings than ceramics. The abstract sgraffito decoration, a technique by which slip or glaze is incised to reveal the clay body, and the limited color range are characteristic of Poor's ceramics. The artist made the dish in honor of his parents, Alfred J. Poor and Josephine Graham Poor, whose names encircle the outer rim of the dish. The top of the rim reads: "Love and faith and sometimes even clay can be as golden as the purest gold."

Two clowns, outlined heavily in black, face one another. One wears a costume of intense red, while the other is dressed in harlequin colors.

Georges Rouault was a deeply spiritual man. His compassion for social outcasts and human suffering can be felt in his paintings, many of which have overtly religious subjects. As a young man, the artist was apprenticed to a stained glass painter. His choice of rich colors and black contours may be a reference to church windows and their sacred scenes.
