““Ash Wednesday is full of joy…
The source of all sorrow is the illusion that of ourselves we are anything but dust.”
–Thomas Merton

“Aimer fait passer le temps, et le temps fait passer l’amour.”

“Love makes the time pass and time makes love pass.”

A hush is over everything,
Silent as women wait for love;
The world is waiting for the spring.
— Sara Teasdale

You Who Never Arrived
~ Rainer Maria Rilke
You who never arrived
in my arms, Beloved,
you who were lost from the start,
I don’t even know what songs
would please you. I have given up
trying to recognize you in the surging wave
of the next moment. All the immense
images in me – the deeply felt
faraway landscape, cities, towers, bridges,
unsuspected turns in the path,
and those powerful lands that were once
pulsing with the life of the gods –
all rise within me to mean
you, who forever elude me.
You who are all the gardens
I have ever gazed at.
An open window in a country house –
and you almost stepped out to meet me.
Streets that I chanced upon –
you had just walked down them and vanished.
And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and,
startled, gave back my too-sudden image.
Who knows? Perhaps the same bird
echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening . . .

And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything.
~William Shakespeare, As You Like It

“So she poured out the liquid music of her voice to quench the thirst of his spirit.”
~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

When you’re really happy,
the birds chirp and the sun shines even on cold dark winter nights
— and flowers will bloom on a barren land. — Terri Guillemets

“In our lives, change is unavoidable, loss is unavoidable. In the adaptability and
ease with which we experience change, lies our happiness and freedom.” — Buddha

“I wish I could show you,
when you are lonely or in darkness,
The astonishing light of your own being…”
Hafiz of Shiraz
