"As a storm begins to darken the sky, Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña’s variegated, unrefined brushstrokes emphasize the rapidly changing light and atmosphere beyond a group of native oak trees. The locale, the Forest of Fontainebleau, was controversial because of its extensive plantings of Russian pine trees. The Barbizon artists strongly opposed this, viewing it as the destruction of the ancient Gallic character of the land."

"The subject of the Three Graces was associated in antiquity with elegance and beauty, and the trio was oftentimes depicted as handmaidens of the goddess Venus. The Graces became popular in the Renaissance with a revival of interest in the ancient world and because of the opportunity they represented to accentuate their natural potential for sensuality. Here, Cranach's nudes illustrate this Renaissance interest, but their slender proportions are Gothic. The figures are highlighted against the dark background making their bodies look more sculptural."

"The Master of the Female Half-Lengths is a name given to an as yet unidentified artist who worked in Antwerp and Bruges and specialized in paintings of half-length female figures. A number of landscapes have been attributed to him, including this panel. This type of panoramic landscape with jagged rocks and small figures engaged in varied activities was intended to evoke the harmony between man and the wonders of nature. Landscapes at this time were considered works of mere imitation, requiring little imaginative power, so their status was usually enhanced by endowing them with a religious subject, in this case the Penitent Saint Jerome."

"The 17th-century Dutch were horticultural leaders who introduced Europe to many new species of flowers from their Caribbean and Far Eastern colonies. Huysum gained an international reputation for the technical skill and detailed realism in his sumptuous arrangements of exotic as well as more common specimens. Included here are two rare specimens of tulip (top, left of center), a popular flower originally imported from Constantinople (Istanbul). In the famous market craze of 1637, dubbed Tulipmania, one tulip bulb in Amsterdam was worth the price of a house on a coveted canal lot. The market crashed in 1638, but tulips were still much prized when Huysum painted these blooms a century later."

A group of elegantly dressed tourists relax on the beach at Trouville on the Normandy coast. Beach scenes such as this were commercially successful for Eugène Boudin. His attitude toward his subjects, however, appears to have been ambivalent. On one occasion, he even described such gatherings of tourists as a “frightful masquerade.” Boudin chose to paint his outdoor scenes on small wood panels, which were more suited to the windy conditions of the beach. Lighter canvases tended to bend with the strong breeze.
