"Named for the small German town it depicts, Gaberndorf II features shifting, luminous planes of color. The prismatic hues may evoke the feeling of a Bach fugue, a layered musical composition of interwoven parts elaborating on a common theme. Lyonel Feininger, who called music the first influence in his life, revered Johann Sebastian Bach above all other composers.

Feininger created this painting while teaching at the Bauhaus, Germany’s innovative art and design school founded in Weimar in 1919. Dedicated to principles of economy, efficiency, and spiritual renewal, the Bauhaus (House of Construction) came to define Modernism."

Nevin Aladağ

'Nevin Aladağ combines pieces if tapestry and carpets from various parts of the world arranged as abstract works.  Different forms and motifs from Persia or from eastern Azerbaijan join monochrome segments with triangles and circles that negotiate formal elements of color, line, and space.  Ornaments, big cats, and birds from the Iranian regions of Tabriz, Nain, and Balochistan (symbolizing fertility, power, and happiness) contrast with monochromatic color fields and allude to craftsmanship going back hundreds of years.

The subject of borders and transgressing borders is not just addressed in terms of content, but also formally. Aladağ suggests the various onnotations of "social fabric"; social spaces are constituted by social fabrics, the demographic, historical, and cultural segments that constitute the structure of a society.  Aladağ's Social Fabric works suggest various temporalities that question conditions of production, globalized trade, and postcolonial perspectives introduced into a contemporary context.'

The Record Player (1939)

"The woman in this painting is lost in her thoughts. One strap of her undergarment has slipped from her shoulder. Red light bathes the left side of her face, shoulder, and arm. The background is dark and cavernous. No music sounds.

What could account for this ominous tone? In 1937, Adolf Hitler labeled Karl Hofer and other modern artists "degenerate." Hofer’s paintings were confiscated. He was removed from his teaching post at the Berlin University of the Arts and was forbidden to paint. In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. World War II began. Still, Hofer painted."
