When you’re really happy,
the birds chirp and the sun shines even on cold dark winter nights
— and flowers will bloom on a barren land. — Terri Guillemets

“Nothing is more beautiful than the love that has weathered the storms of life.
The love of the young for the young, that is the beginning of life.
But the love of the old for the old, that is the beginning of things longer.”
Jerome K. Jerome

“so I wait for you like a lonely house
till you will see me again and live in me.
Till then my windows ache.” ― Pablo Neruda

It’s about time we started to take photography seriously and treat it as a hobby. – Elliott Erwitt

Hawk Roosting
by Ted Hughes
I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed.
Inaction, no falsifying dream
Between my hooked head and hooked feet:
Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.
The convenience of the high trees!
The air’s buoyancy and the sun’s ray
Are of advantage to me;
And the earth’s face upward for my inspection.
My feet are locked upon the rough bark.
It took the whole of Creation
To produce my foot, my each feather:
Now I hold Creation in my foot
Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly –
I kill where I please because it is all mine.
There is no sophistry in my body:
My manners are tearing off heads –
The allotment of death.
For the one path of my flight is direct
Through the bones of the living.
No arguments assert my right:
The sun is behind me.
Nothing has changed since I began.
My eye has permitted no change.
I am going to keep things like this.

“In our lives, change is unavoidable, loss is unavoidable. In the adaptability and
ease with which we experience change, lies our happiness and freedom.” — Buddha

“Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn
your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.” — Henry David Thoreau

“I wish I could show you,
when you are lonely or in darkness,
The astonishing light of your own being…”
Hafiz of Shiraz

On this long storm the Rainbow rose
by Emily Dickinson
On this long storm the Rainbow rose —
On this late Morn — the Sun —
The clouds — like listless Elephants —
Horizons — straggled down —
The Birds rose smiling, in their nests —
The gales — indeed — were done —
Alas, how heedless were the eyes —
On whom the summer shone!
The quiet nonchalance of death —
No Daybreak — can bestir —
The slow — Archangel’s syllables
Must awaken her!

It isn’t what a picture is of, it is what it is about. — John Szarkowski
