High Explosive
by A. B. Banjo Paterson
‘Twas the dingo pup to his dam that said,
“It’s time I worked for my daily bread.
Out in the world I intend to go,
And you’d be surprised at the things I know.
“There’s a wild duck’s nest in a sheltered spot,
And I’ll go right down and I’ll eat the lot.”
But when he got to his destined prey
He found that the ducks had flown away.
But an egg was left that would quench his thirst,
So he bit the egg and it straightway burst.
It burst with a bang, and he turned and fled,
For he thought that the egg had shot him dead.
“Oh, mother,” he said, “let us clear right out
Or we’ll lose our lives with the bombs about;
And it’s lucky I am that I’m not blown up –
It’s a very hard life,” said the dingo pup.
Banjo Paterson’s poems are, in the main, very entertaining! 🙂
The Man from Snowy River & Clancy of the Overflow being two of his most well known; at least here in Australia, Maverick. There’s a lovely rhythm to his poetry/tales and the subject matter is always different and ‘down to earth’.
Love the image of the Dingo… they are a beautiful dog.. 🙂

Thank you Carolyn. The Man from Snowy River was also a film based on the poem.

And what an incredible film it was, Maverick. It followed the poem so reverently. I get goosebumps!

Poems About Wild Animals
The animal kingdom is filled with almost an infinite variety of creatures. Scientists discover new species and subspecies every year. Each one is a wonder unto itself and one could labor for years to uncover its secrets. It is an unfortunate fact that the closest that most of us get to wildlife is through bars at the zoo. Our urban lifestyle has the effect of cutting us off from the glorious world of the animal kingdom. Every animal has a lesson to teach us that we are not hearing. We may think that we have evolved away from contact with animal kingdom, the question is, at what cost?

When I think of dingos I always think of that Seinfeld episode where Elaine says, “The Dingo ate your baby”. 🙂
