The Record Player (1939)
Karl Hofer
"The woman in this painting is lost in her thoughts. One strap of her undergarment has slipped from her shoulder. Red light bathes the left side of her face, shoulder, and arm. The background is dark and cavernous. No music sounds. What could account for this ominous tone? In 1937, Adolf Hitler labeled Karl Hofer and other modern artists "degenerate." Hofer’s paintings were confiscated. He was removed from his teaching post at the Berlin University of the Arts and was forbidden to paint. In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. World War II began. Still, Hofer painted."
I have never seen this powerful painting before so thank you for showing it. How tragic that all artists are silenced during periods when dictators rule. At least these who are conceived to criticise the regime. The same happened to many musicians and song writers.

Thanks Miriam, to a dictator art is rebellion I suppose.

Strangely fascinating isn’t it? There’s so much history behind each and every painting.

I agree with delphini510 and Miriam. The painting is powerful and strangely fascinating. In some ways it reminds me of Edward Hopper but I don’t think his works were quite that ominous.

I could see a little bit of a Hopper connection, they were around the same time.

A beautiful work of art. Dictators would stifle all things of beauty.

I agree Holly, dictators have no aesthetic values.

Just as a by the by, Maverick. Hitler failed the entrance exam of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He was also rejected twice by the institute, once in 1907 and again in 1908. Maybe a little resentment !

I so love the vinyl album she’s holding. it’s a mix of styles and different generations. And then theres the other record in the sleeve. And it all comes together very well (not to mention the boob).

All forms of expression such as art, speech etc are suppressed during the time of a dictator. This is a strong painting.,
