Decoration Day
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Sleep, comrades, sleep and rest
On this Field of the Grounded Arms,
Where foes no more molest,
Nor sentry’s shot alarms!
Ye have slept on the ground before,
And started to your feet
At the cannon’s sudden roar,
Or the drum’s redoubling beat.
But in this camp of Death
No sound your slumber breaks;
Here is no fevered breath,
No wound that bleeds and aches.
All is repose and peace,
Untrampled lies the sod;
The shouts of battle cease,
It is the Truce of God!
Rest, comrades, rest and sleep!
The thoughts of men shall be
As sentinels to keep
Your rest from danger free.
Your silent tents of green
We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,
The memory shall be ours.
Strong stoic words and a beautiful flower.

Thank you, they’re poppies I saw while in Alaska.

Beautiful post. Gorgeous photos, the poppies are a lovely touch. The poem by Longfellow is perfect for capturing a somber mood, while we remember the purpose of today. Great music video. Wishing you well this Decoration Day. ~ Mia xo

How often do you and I have the same title? GMTA. 🙂 Thank you Mia and I hope you have a wonderful day with perhaps some sun which if you’d like I’ll share with you. 🙂 See you later. xoxo

You’re most welcome, a very heartfelt post. Cheers, here’s to GMTA! 🙂 I was quite surprised, maybe once in a lifetime, ha-ha! Perfect day for it, I was considering using, “Martyrs of the Race Course” but I thought it would be far too obscure. Yes, please share some sun, again it’s quite overcast here today, even chilly. Yes, I will hopefully see you later! 🙂 xo

“Martyrs of the Race Course” would have been unique. I almost went with “Memorial Day”. 🙂 Our weather is reversed as it was mostly sunny in the 70’s here today, thank you very much. My day has gone by much too fast though. Have a most pleasant evening Mia and stay warm. Tomorrow I shall train you. 😉 *Hugs* ❤

Unique yes, understood by many, no, ha-ha. 🙂 So again you’ve captured our sunshine, I’m pleased that the weather has been pleasant for you lately. The days are gone in a blink, that’s for sure. Training tomorrow, yay! Thank you for the evening wishes, you know I wish the same for you, a wonderful evening. Have a restful and peaceful night’s sleep. 🙂 *hugs* ❤

What’s not understood think of as Mia’s mystique. I’ll be at work so you can have your sun back the rest of the week. Thank you for the loan. We can also share a restful and peaceful night’s sleep tonight. Have a wonderful day tomorrow too my friend. xo *Hugs* ❤

An “old fashion” rhyme scheme and meter. Not sure if I like the poem in spite of it or because of it.

Thanks, some prefer modern but I like both depending on the prose.

I’m not a huge fan of poppies (as flowers, not symbols), but yours are beautiful.
