American Pie
Don McLean
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The Day the Music Died.

Do you have a key to the meaning?

Besides the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and others, I believe he’s saying a sad goodbye to an era as he was moving on to the 70’s.

It’s an amazing song condsidering it’s about (at the simplest level) three tragic deaths, yet people feel good singing it. I generally feel good hearing it but when you pay attention to the lyrics and if you know anything about the three people, their ages and where they were in their music careers, and the change of plans for one of the passengers, then It does make me sad. But the music usually snaps me out of it.
